Dobson School, information from the yearbook - The history of the Dobson School dates back to 1879. Classes were held in the church, in private homes, and finally, in 1884 a small schoolhouse was erected near the location of the present plant. The Dobson School, like all rural schools, grew slowly up until 1919. Even at this late date the entire faculty consisted of only two or three members. The curriculum from 1879-1919 grew from the simple subjects of reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic to the more complex subjects of algebra, Latin, physics, rhetoric and physiology. From 1919-1940 the Dobson School has kept pace with the trend of modern education. The faculty has grown from 3 to 30; the student body from 5 to 1,000; the yearly expense from a few dollars to $35,000; the capital cost from $5,000 to $50,000. The curriculum has been adjusted to meet the needs of the students to the extent of the addition of five vocational departments: namely, Home Economics, agriculture, Industrial Arts, Commercial and Physical Education. The curriculum has become so enriched by the addition of vocational departments, the twelfth grade, and extra-curricular activities, that it has brought about an increased enrollment to the extent that all classrooms are over flowing with pupils; however, county officials have agreed to better the situation.
