• W.B. White

  W. B. White of Dobson is the dean of high school agriculture teachers in Surry County. Dobson was the first Surry school to secure an agriculture teacher, starting the course in the early twenties. White is a native of Iredell County and was born and reared on a farm. He attended the Farm Life School at Harmony and was graduated from N. C. State College in 1922 with a B. S. degree in agriculture. He was in charge of the dairy herd at N. C. State for two years and did graduate work in dairying. He received his B. S. degree in June 1924. White went to Dobson to teach agriculture in the fall of 1924 and taught there for nine years. He went to Union Grove High School as agriculture teacher in 1933, remaining until last spring when he returned to Dobson. He was married to Miss Elsie Mae Huddleston of Raleigh in June 1922. They have two children, W. B. "Billy" Jr., and Elaine. Billy was a star on the Dobson six-man football team last fall and at the present time is a member of the basketball team.
  

• Viola Snow Reid

  Viola Snow Reid, daughter of - Mr. & Mrs. Winfield Snow, she was a nurse at Surry County Health Department, husband of Edwin E. Reid. "ask any man, woman, or child in Surry County (unless it is a very newcomer) if he or she knows Mrs. Viola Snow Reid and the answer is sure to be in the affirmative. And Mrs. Reid's friends about as numerous as are her acquaintances. Possessing a sunny, magnetic personality, Mrs. Reid wins and holds friends with little effort, In her work in the health clinics of Surry, she has an uncanny way of convincing children and even grown-ups that the prick of a needle in an inoculation, produces no pain. Mrs. Reid was reared at Dobson, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Winfield Snow. Following her graduation from Dobson High School, she pursued a three-year course in nursing at the General Hospital, Knoxville, Tenn. After graduation she engaged in private nursing in Mount /airy and Dobson for a year. She became interested in public health work and took a special course for one year in george peabody hospital, Nashille, Tenn., in preparation for the position with the Surry County Health Department which she has held for four and one half years. In her work as assistant to the county health officer, she weoks seven hours per day, six days in the week and loves it. Five days in the week are spent in the different clinics in the county. On Tuesday she is in the main office at Mount Airy. and whether it chances to be a school clinic, a pre-natal, a tubercular, a cripple clinic or what have you, the work is equally interesting to mrs. Reid. For recreation, she enjoys tennis, swimming and the movies. Her hobby is kodaking and amateur photography, and her collection of snapshots, developed in her own studio fills several albums. Mrs. Reid's home is at Dobson, her husband is Edwin E. Reid being successfully engaged in the mercantile business and other enterprises in the Surry county seat.

  photograph of Eva Hancock, "One of the outstanding business women of Surry County is Miss Eva Hancock, who has been connected with the Surry County Loan and Trust Company at Dobson for the past seventeen years. Miss Hancock, born and reared in Surry County, received her high school and business training at the Brevard Junior College in the mountains of western North Carolina, and upon completion of her education she returned at once to accept a position in her native community at Dobson. After serving as teller of the Dobson Bank for one year, she was promoted to assistant treasurer, ranking next to R. C. "Cleve" Llewellyn in the institution. Then in 1934, when the Surry County Loan and Trust Company and its home office moved to Mount Airy, Miss Hancock was again promoted to treasurer of the Dobson Bank, a post she still holds. Miss Hancock is well known in the banking circles in North Carolina, being an active member of the North Carolina Bankers' Association. She has served as vice-chairman of group 5 of the woman's division of that organization, which includes all the territory around Winston-Salem and Mount Airy. She is also an active member of the Dobson Woman's Club and has served as secretary and as treasurer of that organization at various times. She calls flower growing her chief hobby, and she has a beautiful little flower garden on a small lot just in the rear of the Dobson Bank, which she directs."

  photograph of O.H. Hauser. O. H. Hauser of Westfield, Surry County, is one of the best known men in Northwestern North Carolina. He has been a Baptist minister and high school principal for nearly 18 years and has spent 14 years at Westfield. Hauser's double work became too much for him about a year ago and he suffered a nervous breakdown. He had to give up teaching and now devotes his time to preaching and lecturing to high schools on "Finding Yourself". He has already started his lecturing in Surry County and has won praise from outstanding men throughout the county. Hauser received his high school education in Forsyth County and was graduated from Wake Forest College in 1922. He then taught for two years at Lewisville High School in his home community in Forsyth County. He then went to Francisco in Stokes County and 13 years ago became principal of the Westfield School. When he went there the school had only four classrooms and an auditorium and he was the only high school teacher. During the intervening years he built the school into one of the best units in the Surry system. A modern brick building was erected and the school was placed on the consolidated list through his efforts. He was one of the first county principals to erect a school gymnasium. Hauser can also do other things. He is a mechanic and carpenter and plays a good game of tennis and baseball.
