The Lucy Hanes Chatham Club was founded March 2, 1929 in Winston Salem, North Carolina by Miss Lorene Kelly and Miss Claudia Austin. The first club was organized in Elkin, North Carolina, May 30, 1932. The club was named for the late Mrs. Lucy Hanes Chatham. The purpose of the club is: 1. to promote a more friendly feeling among the girls of Chatham Manufacturing Company. 2. to promote spiritual, mental, physical and social development of its members.
