Nora operated a café on Needmore (Virginia) Street in the mid 1940s. $1.25 bought a meal consisting of meat; two vegetables; dessert; bread; and a drink. Nora cooked for First Presbyterian Church functions; Reeves Community Center; Doe Run Lodge and Mary Bennett. Nora was first married to Powell Ousley and then James Glover. Her daughter Eula poses with her in Kapps Alley

  photograph of Aaron's Place in the Ararat Community. After Willie Bowman retired; his son Aaron operated a place where young people could hang out. It was open on Saturdays until midnight and on Sundays until 11pm. On school nights; it was off-limits. The strongest drink was "Double Cola," and no foul language was accepted. The business remained in the family until 1953. Other entrepreneurs later operated businesses from the building.

Adults played pool in the front room. Leroy learned to barber in Greensboro and Winston Salem; cut hair in the rear in the one-chair barbershop to supplement his teaching salary.

An early successful entrepreneur; Arthur Joyce provided a social outlet for people by opening a café in the Ararat Community. A tobacco barn was converted into a place of music; ; laughter; food; and drink. He made moonshine; brandy and wine which he served to special customers.
