James Polk Mills was born in Patrick County, Virginia on May 19, 1845 to Costain Mills and wife. He entered the Civil War May 27, 1863 when he was 18. His rank was Musician because he played the fife and drum. He was promoted to Corporal in 1864. Member of Surry Co. E 53rd Regiment and was at Appomattox for the surrender in April 9, 1866. He married Sarah Elizabeth Johnson on December 22, 1866.
He died on May 26, 1926 and is buried at Watson family cemetery in Ararat.
