Luther N. Byrd, Historian, born in 1905, genealogist, coach, Newspaper Editor of the Mount Airy Times from 1929 - 1939, reporter at the Mt. Airy Times from 1940-1946, Teacher and Coach at Westfield School from 1929-1948, principal of Westfield from 1945-1948, was referred to as the "godfather" in girls basketball, taught at Elon College for 30 years from 1949-1979. He died in December 1982 at the age of 77.
