Reuben, the powerful sorrel horse that pulled the fire wagon, weighed 1,740 pounds when the Town of Mount Airy bought him from Jim Lovill in 1907 for $325.
l to r: on ground: E.M. "Tobe" Taylor - police chief from 1910 - 1915, Harvey S. Boyd - later became chief and eventually sheriff of Surry County, Dr. R. J. Banks, the veterinarian who watched over Reuben's health.
on wagon: F. "Fate" L. Jones - patrolman, W. R. "Bud" Brannock - fire department driver for 50 years and Tom Dearmin at the top worked tor the municipal power company, with Payton Brannock, the small boy peeking through the ladders.
