photograph of John M. (Marion) Clark, Jr. Engineer on the A & Y Railroad ( Atlantic and Yadkin), at the throttle of Engine 950 Mr. Marion was the 3rd engineer to be on the Atlantic and Yadkin. He was born on March 30, 1877 and died on April 28, 1951. He was referred to as the "Casey Jones" of the A & Y line. He started working for the railroad in 1897 at 21 years old. The old Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad. In 1899, when it was divided (eastern part, the coastline, and the western part, the A & Y) In 1902, he was promoted to engineer. He pulled freight trains, but in1922, he became an A & Y passenger engineer, and he served in that capacity until the passenger trains were taken off n April 30, 1939. He then continued to be an engineer on A & Y freight trains until his retirement. He was from Fayetteville, NC. His father was also an engineer and while in Mount Airy, NC he met and married Mary Cardwell Galloway, grandaughter of R.R. Galloway.
