Mount Airy Graniteers
During the 1930-1950s, almost every town of any size in North Carolina had a professional minor league baseball team. Mount Airy featured two teams: The Mount Airy Reds from 1934 - 1937, and the Graniteers from 1938 - 1941 and 1946 - 1950. After being interrupted by the War, baseball returned and life-long friendshops formed between the players and fans during the final Graniteer years. The Blue Ridge League folded in 1950 with the Graniteers winning the league championship. Professional baseball never returned to Mount Airy or other small towns, but the memories continued with players who settled in the Mount Airy area and through reunions that brought players and fans together. -
First Baptist Church of Mount Airy
Miscellaneous items pertaining to the First Baptist Church in Mount Airy, NC including directories, programs, newsletters, bulletins and photographs. CHURCH HISTORY Mt. Airy First Baptist Church was organized on August 9, 1879 under the name The Mt. Airy Baptist Church of Christ. Sixteen people formed the charter membership which has grown to our current membership of more than 800 and a resident membership of almost 500. The organizing of the church is believed to be unique in the fact that, the day it was founded, the membership had at hand a new, up-to-date, frame building ready and waiting. A Sunday School was promptly organized and a Women’s Missionary Society was organized in 1887. In 1906 work began on the granite building that would house a sanctuary, but today houses our fellowship hall. This building was completed in 1912 and served as the center for all activities until the granite educational building was dedicated the week of March 1-6, 1953. A new sanctuary was dedicated October 6, 1968 and remains as the current sanctuary. After worship services and activities were moved to the new sanctuary and educational building , what became known as the "old sanctuary" was used less and began to deteriorate. Yet, the church continued to grow and more space was needed. So, in March 1990 the church voted to undertake extensive renovations designed to both preserve the wonderful properties of the old sanctuary and utilize all the space inside to its fullest potential. From this came a Fellowship Hall where many church activities are held, a modern, expanded kitchen that allows us to provide ministries such as Friends Feeding Friends, a dedicated nursery suite, children's Sunday School floor, and a youth suite with Sunday School rooms and a gathering place for our youth ministry. Since that time, renovations have been completed on the Educational Building and the old Fellowship Hall, creating a place for small gatherings such as showers, meetings and funeral visitations. We are currently undergoing another period of renovation, updating our current sanctuary building. Throughout our history, all of the expansions and renovations were undertaken in order to make our physical facility useful and accessible to everyone. The additions of Handicapped parking, a separate Nursery entrance, an elevator, and numerous ramps have combined to make FBC a welcoming place to all. The paragraphs above list the history of our church buildings, but our history goes far beyond buildings and renovations. We have seen our membership grow with each passing year and have been blessed with many wonderful pastors and lay leaders. Our WMU and Baptist Men have been and continue to be active in prayer, missions and many other ways. In the community, Friends Feeding Friends provides a meal to those who need one each week. We have a busy Senior Adult Prime Timers ministry, as well as ongoing youth and children’s activities and projects. For more information, a complete history of our church is available in the church office. The following excerpt was taken from the forward of our Church History compiled in honor of our 125th anniversary in 2004. We hope we will continue to live life in such a way. It is interesting to note that the light bulb was invented in the same year that our church was organized. May we suggest that just as the light bulb brought light to the world, so did the members and work of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Airy. As men and women through the years have allowed God to lead in their lives, they have brightened and illuminated many things. May we go forward as a church in seeking God's will in our lives, that God may be glorified and that we may be the people He would have us be." -

Matt Hines, General Contractor
Items related to Matt Hines, General Contractor James Madison "Matt" Hines was born July 31, 1893 at his parent's farm in Carroll County, Virginia - not very far from the North Carolina border. Matt's father was William "Will" Hines. Will's parents were Robert Hines and Susan Forkner, who lived in Mount Airy, North Carolina. Matt's mother was Mary E. Virginia "Mollie" Mitchell. Mollie was born in Franklin County, Virginia and her parents were William Allen "Buck" Mitchell and Nancy Jane Price. Matt married Stella Sherman Parker on May 12, 1917 in Mount Airy. Early in their marriage, Matt built a two-story home for his wife and young daughter, Alma. It was the first home he built and is located at the corner of Country Club Road and North Main Street. The current address is 1809 North Main Street. Matt did most of the work on that house himself. The lumber for the house came from his family's land in Virginia. He loaded logs onto a horse-drawn cart and took them to a mill to have them cut into lumber. When a contractor came to Mount Airy to build a school, Matt got a job with him, and stayed on that project until it was finished. The contractor then placed Matt in charge of remodeling a house. Soon after that, Matt's brother-in-law, WeldonParker, asked Matt to build a new house for him. Then, several other people asked him to do the same thing. Matt taught himself how to draw blueprints, and he started his own contracting business. As Matt's business became successful, he built a new home for his family, which later included another daughter Marianna. It was a two-story brick home and is located at what is now 1132 North Main Street in Mount Airy. He built that home in the 1920s and was originally numbered 480 North Main Street. Over the years, Matt employed many people and built many houses, including some of the nicest homes in Mount Airy. He built some of the stores downtown and schools and churches. Matt also built homes in other towns, including Dobson and Winston-Salem, where one of his projects was a big apartment building. He also built many houses to rent and sell. Sometimes Matt had three to five projects going at once. To keep a steady supply of lumber, Matt bought tracts of land and started his own lumber company. He also opened Hines Pallet and Reel Company where they made pallets for the government during World War II. The most active years for Matt and his contracting business were in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. Matt eventually retired in the 1950s and moved part-time to Daytona Beach, Florida. He died on July 4, 1980 and was buried in Mount Airy at Oakdale Cemetery. -

Mount Airy Chapter No. 18 Order of the Eastern Star
Mount Airy Chapter No. 18 Order of the Eastern Star yearbook 1978-1979. The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world to which both men and women may belong. Worldwide, there are approximately 1 million members under the General Grand Chapter. The Eastern Star is a social order comprised of persons with spiritual values but it is not a religion. The appeal rests in the true beauty of the refreshing and character-building lessons that are so sincerely portrayed in its ritualistic work. A deep fraternal bond exists between the members. It is the wholesome relationship of sisterly and brotherly love brought about through high principles exemplified in our lives which makes us near and dear to each other. While this is an Order composed of people of deep spiritual convictions, it is open to all faiths, except no faith. The personal welfare of our members is vital to all of those in the Eastern Star and it is considered a privilege to help another member whenever we can. View Video Purposes: The stated purposes of the organization are: Charitable, Educational, Fraternal and Scientific; but there is much more to it than that. Dr. Rob Morris, the Poet Laureate of Masonry, founded the Order using beautiful and inspiring biblical examples of heroic conduct and moral values. These portray the noble principles which should adorn the personal lives of Eastern Star members. Eastern Star strives to take good people and through uplifting and elevating associations of love and service, and through precept and example, build an Order which is truly dedicated to charity, truth and loving kindness. Projects: Concrete evidence of the charitable nature of the organization as it affects others is the millions of dollars which have been raised within the membership to support national, jurisdictional and local charities. Many Grand Jurisdictions have homes for their senior members. -

Moody Funeral Home
Items pertaining to Moody Funeral Home including booklets, postcards, pamphlets, photographs, calendars. In the year 1902, Mr. E. A. Hannah and his wife arrived in Mount Airy from Indiana to go into business as a harness and coffin dealer. In 1915, Wade C. Moody, a young local resident, was hired by Hannah to be the janitor and to handle the two horses that pulled the funeral coach. In 1918, Moody married and was later drafted into the army for two years in World War I. Upon returning to Mount Airy, he was re-hired by Hannah. By this time, Mr. Hannah was in failing health and sold a part of the funeral business to Mr. Moody. Then, in 1920-21, Mr. Hannah sold the rest of the business to Mr. D.E. Nelson, and the funeral business then became the Nelson-Moody Funeral Home. In 1927-28, Mr. Nelson sold his half to Mr. Wade Moody, and the name was changed to Moody Funeral Home. The Business was then moved to the corner of Market and Franklin Street, and Mr. Moody became the sole owner. In 1935, Dennis W. Moody, the son of Wade C. Moody, joined his father in the business. But like his father before him, Dennis had to leave the business temporarily to serve his four years in the Armed Services. In 1947-48, Dennis became the President of Moody Funeral Home, which then extended into Dobson, North Carolina and Stuart, Virginia. This made the total of three facilities, which is what there is today. Dennis W. Moody, Jr. joined his father in 1969-70, and was with the business until his death in 1983. Robert H. Moody, current President, joined the firm in 1978. As we are in the fourth generation of serving the people of Northwest North Carolina and Southwest Virginia, our charge is to live up to the slogan which Dennis W. Moody, Jr. created: "We strive for a quality of service that will give you a service of quality." -

American Freedom Association
Literature and records from the American Freedom Association, founded in 1953. The program began in 1947 as the Mount Airy Chapter of the United World Federalists Movement. from the American Freedom Association website: The American Freedom Association was formed in June, 1953 "by a group of citizens who were convinced that a vast program of public information and education on world law and its relation to religion, peace and freedom was urgently needed if our Nation and civilization was to be preserved." Many of the founding members were members of the World Federalist Society. The chosen name reflected a strong perspective on the required conditions for American Freedom. It also reflected a need for a name that was acceptable at the height of the era of Senator Joe McCarthy. AFA's purpose was (and is) to "provide the American people with information on the relation of world law to religion, peace, and freedom." One purpose in establishing a non-profit, non-political organization was to enable the raising of funds sufficient to provide education to the public. -

Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church
Items related to the Flat Rock Pentecostal Church in the Flat Rock Community of Surry County, NC. The Flat Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church was organized on October 15, 1923 by the Rev. H.V. Dempsey, pastor at that time of the Mount Airy Pentecostal Holiness Church located on Durham Street. The organization took place in the home of Curtis Blackmon. There were six charter members - Mr. & Mrs. William Branch, Mr. & Mrs. Curtis Blackmon, Mrs. Mitch (Essie) Timmons, and Mrs. Edna Davis. This comprised the total membership for sometime. A meeting place was secured in an old rundown and planked-up building near what is now known as the Belton Road. In late 1925 and early 1926, Curtis Blackmon purchased property on both sides of the street now known as Pentecostal Holiness Church Road. On the Northeast side of the street, he built a home; on the Southwest side of the street, he donated property for the Pentecostal Holiness Church. Curtis Blackmon was a humble but determined and God fearing man. The church was built largely by his efforts and did prosper. The present church structure was built during the pastorate of Dr. Jack Goodson in 1968. -
