  • James Polk Mills and Sarah Elizabeth Johnson Mills family

    James Polk Mills was born in Patrick County, Virginia on May 19, 1845 to Costain Mills and wife. He entered the Civil War May 27, 1863 when he was 18. His rank was Musician because he played the fife and drum. He was promoted to Corporal in 1864. Member of Surry Co. E 53rd Regiment and was at Appomattox for the surrender in April 9, 1866. He married Sarah Elizabeth Johnson on December 22, 1866. He died on May 26, 1926 and is buried at Watson family cemetery in Ararat. Children: George W.-1867, Eliza E.-1871, William H. - 1872, Mary Susan -1874, Feby W. - 1875, Nannie E. - 1879, Kate - ??

    photograph of William Polk Dobson, 1783-1846, wife was-Mary (Polly) Hughes Dobson, they lived in the Rockford Township, they were married 2-2-1802 and soon after purchased the Richard Horne plantation just east of Rockford on a bend of the Yadkin River, they had 12 children when Surry County was divided in 1850 the new county seat was called "Dobson" in honor of this family
